This is an example of romantic music

(HALIDONMUSIC, 2017)

The exact defining time when the Romantic period is debatable but most agree that it started around the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

"The Romantic period started around 1830 and ended around 1900, as compositions became increasingly expressive and inventive. Expansive symphonies, virtuosic piano music, dramatic operas, and passionate songs took inspiration from art and literature."

("Classic FM", n.d.)

History of Romantic Era

The predecessor of the Romantic period was the Classical period where much of the music was made for the rich and famous aristocrats of high society. Composers who lived then during the 1700s to the cusp of 1800s were employed by royalty or rich house holds. Thus their music was composed under patronage and had little creative freedom and composed mostly songs that the patron household would like to hear.

"Compositions were very ornamental and technically and intricate during the Baroque period and was later balanced by more clarity and order during the Classical period"

"But generally speaking, the Classical period in musical history is dominated by four giants, all associated with Vienna, and sometimes collectively known as the First Viennese School. They were Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. Their works are still part of the core repertoire of classical music as a whole"

Unique qualities of this period of music

Romantic period is when the first starts of how music is used to express the world as it is an not into regimental highly structured as seen in the predecessor of music compositions.

"One of the key features of Romantic music is its strong association with other art-forms, particularly literature or painting."

(Wade-Matthews, Thompson & Wade-Matthews, 2007)

Music composed in the Romantic period is characterized in its portray of emotions. Many artists and composers of this time worked on the creating scores for stage plays and concerts that would be fore the common people therefore music was no longer just for the super rich.

On the verge of Impressionism which Debussy vehemently denies but the piece does give you a sense of quiet solitude and a tinge of yearning.
