The Real New York City Compression Trick (Owsinski, 2015)

Intro

Parallel compression is a staple technique in a producers tool box to make the drums sound larger than life and still get that punch that hits you in the chest. This method was called in some places the New York style compression which was a phrase coined by Bobby Owsinski in 1999 to describe a style of overlaying a compressed drum track with an unaltered clean track.

Application

Essentially, this is a technique whereby you use the compressor as a send effect (Houghton, 2011)

Example

Below is a video of how we implemented the technique in our current project for the track called "World Reveal" composition for Augustine.
