What happened during the week?
Tuesday
Meeting with Project lead Will regarding project video and began making the film from scratch in the
Wednesday
Worked on the project video with will for 3 hours while coming up with ideas for the sounds and Foley for the monster in the level
Researched
Thursday
Attended class and as introduced to the C24 which is a control surface for ProTools
During class we worked in the foley room to record sound to picture for "Shawn of the Dead"
I was working on driving the ProTools session where we i took directions from the director to guide the performance.
I gave suggestions during class to setup a talk back microphone so that the foley artist could hear what was being said by hooking up a room mice to the input side of the Fireface interface. That way. I suggested this because while I was working as a foley artist I found that I could not hear the directors instructions through the thick glass doors.
I also learned that the glass doors while blocking out most sounds were not able to completely isolate the sounds from the control room if loud enough.
I also found it fun to overlay several different sounds of the same growl sounds.
During a part of the session I had to add the foot steps Foley for a girl walking in a skirt, the problem was I had trousers on and it added to the rustling to the Foley that broke the immersion. I then brainstormed an idea to roll up my trousers and thus removed the rustling noise from the Foley. This was a good learning experience to become more creative in capturing sound.
Met with game developer Will and found out that 2 programmers pulled out of the project and therefore there was a reduction of the game scope. The project scope has been reduced the point that they do not need a sound designer to complete the game and only needed us to provide assets to their specifications
This reduction in scope means that we will only need to provide assets for the final production
Do any of the events or learning material relate to my profession?
While working with the game developer I was introduced to using Github as a repository for the project files. This allows the developer to continue to work on the game files while I as the sound engineer can work on the audio assets and implementation without affecting his version of the game inside Unity.
Will introduced a few new workflows that game developers use to collaborate.
Is there an academic or scientific explanation and what are the lessons learned?
If given the chance how would I respond or approach this week?
